Gretchen Fujimura

Goldwater Scholar

Gretchen Fujimura is a junior studying Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Honors with a minor in Chemistry and Nutrition and has been selected to be a Barry Goldwater Scholar for the 2022-2023 academic year. She aspires to pursue a Ph.D. in Immunology with a focus on virology and Biochemistry. Gretchen aspires to lead a research team developing vaccines and carrying out clinical trials at organizations such as the NIH or the CDC. Her mentors are Elisar Barbar, Zhen Yu, Andy Karplus.

Xavier Tacker is a sophomore studying Pre-Forestry and Bioresource Research with a minor in Chemistry and has been selected to be a Barry Goldwater Scholar for the 2022-2023 academic year. He aspires to pursue a Ph.D. in Plant Biology and Bioengineering. Xavier plans to work in academia conducting translational research on genetic improvement of forest trees to help forests cope with the impacts of climate change. His mentors are Steven H. Strauss, Ryan Mueller, Fiona Tomas Nash.

Norway

Stan Cates graduated in 2020 with a bachelor of science in Zoology and a minor in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences. He will pursue a Master of Science degree in Biology, specializing in Northern Populations and Ecosystems, with the department of Arctic and Marine Biology at the University of Tromsø in Norway. Stan plans to study how behavioral monitoring can be implemented to better understand arctic conservation and needs.

Jeremy Chu graduated in 2018 with a bachelor of science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He will be a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Taiwan. Jeremy hopes to engage his students by nurturing an inclusive environment, incorporating creative projects, and finding ways to break down language barriers. He hopes that his Fulbright grant will further his abilities to communicate with and serve diverse, multilingual populations in his future career as a family physician.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Delie

Uganda

Jacqueline (Jackie) Delie graduated in 2020 with a master of science in Wildlife Management. She will conduct a research project in collaboration with Makerere University in Uganda to study participatory conservation governance in relation to communities neighboring Queen Elizabeth National Park. This project aims to inform the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Strategic Plan policies by taking into account both biodiversity conservation and community livelihood development considerations.

South Korea

Julia Kim graduated in 2020 with an Honors bachelor of science in Public Health and minors in Education and Computer Science. She will conduct a research project in collaboration with the Korea Legacy Committee, a non-profit organization in South Korea, to collect micro-memoirs from impoverished South Korean elders and illustrate their stories through social media posts and a collective interactive online storybook, aimed at engaging South Korean youth in conversations around themes of mental health, resilience, and social-emotional skills.

Costa Rica

Christina Linkem is a graduating master’s student earning a master of science in Fisheries Science. She will conduct a research project in collaboration with the University of Costa Rica’s Freshwater Tropical Ecology Lab in Costa Rica to develop a benchmark of fish community structure in undisturbed tropical stream ecosystems. Christina also hopes to get involved in science education with the local community.

Saki Nakai is a graduating senior earning an Honors bachelor of arts in Psychology and minors in French, Music Performance, and Mathematics. Saki will conduct a research project in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg, to explore identity construal and acculturation in American and Japanese expatriates in the multicultural country of Luxembourg.

Jane Vinesky is a graduating senior earning a bachelor of science in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences through OSU's Ecampus. Jane will pursue a master of science in Marine Resource Management at the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas del Instituto Politécnico Nacional in La Paz, Mexico. She aims to generate research for conservation that will contribute to management guidelines and legal protections for mantas in both Mexico and the United States.

Ireland

Hannah Mankle is currently an alternate for the Fulbright to Ireland. Hannah  is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on renewable energy. She proposes a research project in collaboration with University College Cork to explore the optimization of small-scale wave energy converter technology. She is also interested in getting involved with the mountain biking community in Cork.

Fulbright-MITACS Canada Scholar

Bridget Price ‘23 was recently selected for the Fulbright-MITACS Globalink program. Bridget will be conducting a research project this summer with Dr. Satinder Kaur Brar at York University in Toronto titled "Oleaginous Yeast-Based Advanced Platforms for Drop-in Fuel Feedstock Production from Forest Residues.” According to Bridget, “I applied to the Fulbright Mitacs Globalink Program for the opportunity to conduct summer research in another country. Through this program, I hope to grow as a researcher and increase my knowledge in the area of lignocellulosic biofuel production. I am also excited to experience a summer in a new city and form connections with researchers from around the world!” The Fulbright-MITACS Globalink Scholarship allows undergraduate students to undertake advanced research projects in Canada during the summer in their area of interest.

Truman National Finalist

Jax Richards (he/him) is a third-year student quadruple majoring in economics, public policy, political science, and communications. In his first year at OSU, he started a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides a platform for youth to advocate higher quality youth services, and he has since been a volunteer leader in numerous organizations. As a result, Jax has found himself pushing for more equitable and accessible youth services everywhere from Corvallis, Oregon, to the 2021 United Nations Climate Conference in Glasgow. Additionally, he's served as a legislative aide in the Oregon Senate and now functions as an intern in the U.S. House of Representatives. Jax works as an Honors College ambassador and serves as the Student Trustee on the Oregon State University Board of Trustees. With the Truman Scholarship, he wants to pursue concurrent Masters programs in Public Administration and Social Work in order to address the public policy gap within social service.
