Udall Scholarship

Award Description

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors on the basis of their leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to American Indian nations or to the environment. The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.

Scholarships may be awarded in either Tribal Public PolicyNative Healthcare, or Environment. The Udall scholarship provides up to $7,000 for eligible academic expenses.

Roberto Ponce Velez and Eliza Porter

Roberto Ponce Velez, an OSU junior in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences has been named a 2024 Udall Scholar in the Environment category.  Also a 2024 Goldwater Scholar, Roberto is the first OSU student to receive both national honors.  Additionally, Eliza Porter has been recognized by the Udall Foundation with an Honorable Mention in the Tribal Public Policy category. Eliza is a junior majoring in Environmental Sciences.

Award Details

The Udall Scholarship provides:

  • $7,000 towards the cost of tuition and academic expenses.
  • Invitation to a scholar orientation held in August in Tuscon, Arizona. Scholars receive a travel scholarship for costs associated with the orientation.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for a Udall Scholarship if...

  • You are a sophomore or junior-level college student in the United States, pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2024-2025 academic year;
  • You will be pursuing a bachelor's degree full-time during the 2025-2026 academic year; and
  • You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident

    Sophomores are in their second year of college (outside of high school). The Udall Foundation doesn’t worry about credits; terms of experience on campus are important, so if you are in your first year at OSU out of high school, you would wait until your second year to apply, even if you have sophomore standing. 

    Juniors have 1 more year to complete after the year in which they apply. Selected Scholars must be enrolled full time all terms of the academic year after winning the award.

For the Native Tribal Policy/Healthcare category only: 

  • You must be an enrolled member of a state or federally-recognized tribe or band. Visit the Udall FAQ's page to find out more.

Application Timeline

The Udall scholarship requires institutional nomination. Please contact LeAnn Adam or Becca Otto to discuss your interest in applying. 

  • Application opens: October 18, 2024
  • OSU campus deadline: February 3, 2025 
  • OSU nominations due to Udall: March 5, 2025
  • Udall scholarships awarded: April 18, 2025
