Five from OSU nominated to compete nationally for 2022 Barry Goldwater Scholarship  

(Corvallis, OR, January 25, 2022) Oregon State University is pleased to announce that five students have been nominated to represent OSU and compete nationally for the 2022 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Final selection of Goldwater scholarships will be confirmed in spring 2022. 

Sullivan “Sully” Bailey-Darland is a junior undergraduate student in the Colleges of Science and Honors double majoring in Physics and Chemistry. Sully aims to pursue a PhD in Physics of Applied Mathematics in order to study the intersection of data science, computational modeling, and the physical sciences as a career researcher. Mentors: Kevin Brown, Chong Fang, Michael Sokoloff 

Michael Brodeur is a junior postbaccalareaute degree student in the College of Science earning a bachelor of science in Chemistry. Michael plans to pursue a PhD in Materials Chemistry in order to conduct research on the sustainable development of semiconductor technology, clean energy, and environmentally-friendly implementations as a career researcher. Mentors: Oksana Ostroverkhova, Greg Giesbers 

Gretchen Fujimura is a junior undergraduate student in the Colleges of Science and Honors earning an Honors bachelor of science in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (Pre-med option) with minors in Chemistry and Nutrition. In her career, Gretchen aspires to an MD/PhD in Immunology with a focus on Biochemistry in order to become a physician-scientist and lead researcher on investigational vaccine trials. Mentors: Elisar Barbar, Zhen Yu 

James Ho is a junior undergraduate student in the Colleges of Engineering and Honors studying Chemical Engineering. James aims to pursue a PhD in Materials Science and to work in research and development engineering for materials as a career researcher. Mentors: Kyriakos Stylianou, Mas Subramanian, David Cann

Xavier Tacker is a sophomore undergraduate student in the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry double majoring in Bioresource Research and Forestry with a minor in Chemistry. In his career, Xavier aims to pursue a PhD in Plant Biology and Bioengineering and to work in academia conducting translational research on genetic improvement of forest trees to help forests cope with the impacts of climate change. Mentors: Steven Strauss, Ryan Mueller, Fiona Tomas Nash 

The OSU nomination committee includes faculty from the Colleges of Science and Engineering: Skip Rochefort and Kelsey Stoerzinger from Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering; Kevin Gable from Chemistry; Heidi Schellman from Physics; Kari Van Zee from Biochemistry and Biophysics; and David Hendrix from Biochemistry and Biophysics and Computer Science. Student advising and nominations were coordinated by LeAnn Adam and Ashley Weibel in the OSU Office of National and Global Scholarships Advising.  

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation serves as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
