Five OSU Students Nominated to Compete Nationally for 2021 Goldwater Scholarship

(Corvallis, OR, February 2, 2021) Oregon State University is pleased to announce that five students have been nominated to represent OSU and compete nationally for the 2021 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Final selection of Goldwater scholarships will be confirmed in spring 2021. 

Emily Gemmill is a junior undergraduate student in the College of Science double majoring in Biochemistry & Biophysics (Advanced Biophysics option) and Math (Mathematical Biology option) with a minor in Chemistry. Emily aims to pursue a PhD in Biophysics or Computational Biology in order to research cellular trafficking and networks as a biomedical career researcher. Mentor(s): Kevin Brown, Weihong Qiu, Melody Wilson 

Josh Griffis is a junior undergraduate student in the College of Science studying Biochemistry & Biophysics with a Neuroscience option. In his career, Josh aims to pursue a doctoral degree in Neuroscience and to study neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases as a career researcher. Mentor(s): Rick Cooley, Ryan Mehl, Kari Van Zee

Alyssa Pratt is a sophomore undergraduate student in the Colleges of Science and Engineering double majoring in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (Computational Molecular Biology option) and Computer Science (Applied Computer Science option). She is also an Honors student. Alyssa aims to pursue a PhD in Computational Biology and to conduct research on molecular structures as a career researcher. Mentor(s): David Hendrix, Susan Rowe, Kari Van Zee

Tegan Thurston is a junior undergraduate student in the Colleges of Engineering and Honors earning an Honors bachelor of science in Bioengineering. In her career, Tegan aspires to an MD/PhD in Biomedical Engineering in order to become a physician engineer. Mentor(s): Michael Blouin, V John Mathews, Xinhui Zhu 

Cindy Wong is a junior undergraduate student in the College of Engineering earning a bachelor of science in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Music Performance. Cindy plans to pursue a PhD in Chemical Engineering in order to research environmental issues related to energy storage, sustainable energy, and materials science as a career researcher. Mentor(s): Konstantinos Goulas, Willie (Skip) Rochefort, Kelsey Stoerzinger 

The OSU nomination committee includes faculty from the Colleges of Science and Engineering: Skip Rochefort and Kelsey Stoerzinger from Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering; Kevin Gable from Chemistry; Bob Mason from Integrative Biology; and Ryan Mehl and Kari Van Zee from Biochemistry and Biophysics. Student advising and nominations were coordinated by LeAnn Adam in the OSU Office of National and Global Scholarships Advising.  

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation serves as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
