National and Global Scholarships Advising at Oregon State University is pleased to announce that three OSU students are among U.S undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the United States selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad during the 2023-2024 academic year. The complete list of students who have been selected to receive Gilman Scholarships, including students’ home state, university and host country, is available on the website. The Congressionally funded Gilman Program broadens the U.S. student population studying and interning abroad by providing scholarships to outstanding undergraduate Pell Grant recipients who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise study abroad. Since the program’s establishment in 2001, over 1,300 U.S. institutions have sent more than 36,000 Gilman scholars who represent the rich diversity of the United States to 155 countries around the globe.
The following students from Oregon State University have been awarded a Gilman scholarship:*
- Quetza Juarez: junior studying Human Development and Family Science for a health rotation internship in Ecuador
- Tori Listoe: sophomore in Human Development and Family Science and Public Policy for an internship in India
- Alder Montes: junior in Natural Resources for an academic study and internship in Brazil
*Recipients will be permitted to travel to countries with a Level 1 or Level 2 State Department Travel Advisories and all others will be offered the option to defer. Please visit the Gilman website for more information on the scholarship’s Travel Advisory Policy.
These students were awarded scholarships representing a combined total of $12,000 for spring 2023 and summer 2023 programs.
The Gilman Program aims to make study abroad, and its career advantages, more accessible and inclusive for American students. The program particularly focuses on supporting first-generation college students, students in the STEM fields, ethnic and racial minority students, students with disabilities, students who are veterans, students attending community colleges and minority serving institutions, and other populations underrepresented in study abroad, as well as broadening the destinations where scholars study or intern.
Applications for the Gilman International Scholarship will open again soon for the March 2023 application cycle. Applications close on March 9, 2023 for all students wishing to study or intern abroad during the summer 2023, fall 2023, academic year 2023-2024, and spring 2024.
The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
