Gilman Scholarship Program

Since the scholarship's inception in 2001, over 200 OSU students have received Gilman Scholarships to study abroad! 

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

Award Details 

The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.  The program also aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries and world regions. OSU Students should work closely with the Office of Global Opportunities for program selection and advising. 

Award amounts will vary up to $5,000 depending on the length of study and student need. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominately spoken may be considered for the Critical Need Language Award, for a total maximum award of $8,000. 

New: in 2023 Gilman now offers a STEM Supplemental Award of up to $1,000 to conduct STEM research associated with their study abroad program

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Eligibility 

Gilman Scholarship

An applicant must be:

• A citizen of the United States
• An undergraduate student in good standing
• Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship
• In the process of applying for, or accepted to, a study abroad or internship program that is eligible for academic credit (there is no program length requirement)
• Applying for a program in a country with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System. Certain areas within these countries may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations, as such; students will not be allowed to travel to these areas.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

An applicant must be:

• A citizen of the United States
• An undergraduate student in good standing
• Dependent child of an active duty military member(s) during the time of application in one of the following branches: Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard
• Recipient of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship
• In the process of applying for, or accepted to, a study abroad or internship program that is eligible for academic credit
• Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System. Certain areas within these countries may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations, as such; students will not be allowed to travel to these areas.

• The Gilman scholarship program encourages students to seek feedback on their applications before the deadline. National and Global Scholarships Advising staff are available to read and provide suggestions on your essays.  Contact us for assistance with your application..   
• The Gilman Scholarship application requires university certification from a study abroad and a financial aid advisor. Please select any advisor listed in the dropdown menu in the online application and we will certify your application following the deadline.  Similarly, please select any financial aid officer listed in the dropdown menu in the online application and they will be automatically notified to verify your Pell Grant. 
• See Gilman website for deadlines, two per academic year in early October and early March. Please note that Gilman Scholarship deadlines are often well in advance of deadlines to apply to study or intern abroad—please plan accordingly.
